In the context of TheTransitioner

In the context of TheTransitioner organizations is used as a generic term that refers to any group of individuals (humans or not) forming a coherent dynamic structure that behaves as a whole. An organization can be small or big, local or global, pyramidal or distributed, formal or informal, organized in the biosphere, noosphere, theosphere...

Examples:

  • Original collective intelligence organizations: a tribe, a village, a sport team, a commando, a jazz band, a board of directors, a professional team
  • Swarm intelligence organizations: ant colonies, schools of fish, flocks of birds, bee swarms, etc
  • Pyramidal collective intelligence organizations: medium and large corporations, administrations, governments, institutions, armies, churches...
  • Global Collective Intelligence organizations: MMOGs, online communities, scientific community, communities of practice... and many to come that will need new names and for which a classification work needs to be done.

Some organizations are in intermediary stages. For instance a medium size company, after its startup stage, usually stands between original collective intelligence and pyramidal collective intelligence. On a larger scale, most NGO's and social networks today are hybrid organizations that stand between pyramidal collective intelligence and global collective intelligence.

Global organizations

Global organizations

is used in TheTransitioner to mention organizations that have overcome the 2 limitations of original collective intelligence: number (of members) and distance (separating members).
